Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 6, doi: 10.1007/s11783-018-1082-3

Abstract:

Spent FCC catalyst with lanthanum is proposed as a novel P-removal adsorbent.

The spent FCC catalyst exhibits 99% adsorption efficiency for low P-concentration wastewater (C0 <5.0 mg/L).

High affinity, endothermic reaction and fast sorption kinetics are achieved.

The phosphate is adsorbed in the form of LaPO4 and KH2PO4.

Removal of rhodamine B from aqueous solution by BiPO

Lei LI, Jian XU, Changsheng GUO, Yuan ZHANG

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2013, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 382-387 doi: 10.1007/s11783-013-0504-5

Abstract: Hexahedron-like BiPO microcrystals were sucessfully synthesized via a template-free hydrothermal method. The resulting samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV–vis spectroscopy. The BiPO samples were of pure monoclinic phase, and the initial amount of during synthesis did not show obvious effect on the phase properties of the materials. The hexahedron-like BiPO microcrystal had explicitly cut edges, and its thickness was about 1 μm. The photocatalytic performance of the BiPO catalysts was evaluated by photodegradation of RhB under UV light irradiation with commerial Degussa P25 TiO as reference. Compared with P25, the BiPO catalysts displayed higher photocatalytic activity, with 98.7% of RhB degraded during 60-min experiment. Cost evaluation analysis was adopted to describe the energy consumption of the degradation process, and the results suggested the potential application of this material in the field of dye-contaminated wastewater treatment or environmental matrices remediation.

Removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by activated carbon impregnated with humic acid

LIU Hanchao,FENG Suping,ZHANG Nannan,DU Xiaolin,LIU Yongli

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 3,   Pages 329-336 doi: 10.1007/s11783-013-0553-9

Abstract: Humic acid (HA) was impregnated onto powdered activated carbon to improve its Cu(II) adsorption capability. The optimum pH value for Cu(II) removal was 6. The maximum adsorption capacity of HA-impregnated activated carbon was up to 5.98 mg·g , which is five times the capacity of virgin activated carbon. The adsorption processes were rapid and accompanied by changes in pH. In using a linear method, it was determined that the equilibrium experimental data were better represented by the Langmuir isotherm than by the Freundlich isotherm. Surface charges and surface functional groups were studied through zeta potential and FTIR measurements to explain the mechanism behind the humic-acid modification that enhanced the Cu(II) adsorption capacity of activated carbon.

Effects of baffles on separation of aqueous ethanol solution with hollow fibers

Zhihong YANG, Guoliang ZHANG, Lan LIN, Danping REN, Qin MENG, Hongzi ZHANG

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 1,   Pages 68-72 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0130-8

Abstract: The effects of baffles on the operation and mass-transfer characteristics in novel hollow fiber membrane contactor used in distillation were investigated. Hollow fiber membranes, coated with a 7 μm polydimethyl-siloxane, were operated as structural packing in the separation of ethanol-water solutions. The parallel flow mode was chosen for separation due to the stronger driving force of the concentration difference, in which liquid flows through the lumens of the fibers and vapor flows countercurrent-wise outside the fibers. Two baffles were installed on the shell side of the membrane contactors to enhance separation, which had a round shape with a semi-lunar hole. The results show that both baffled and unbaffled membrane contactors gave better, more productive separations than traditional packing in distillation, such as the excellent Sulzer Gauze BX structured packing. The baffled membrane contactors performed better than unbaffled ones, especially at high vapor velocities. The minimal HTU of membrane contactor with baffles could reach as low as 4.5 cm, and almost all the contactors could work well above the limit where flooding normally occurs in conventional cases. Theoretical analysis predicted that baffles helped membrane module to obtain a higher mass-transfer coefficient and a smaller mass-transfer resistance. Finally, theoretical mass-transfer coefficient and experimental value were compared as well as the contribution of each individual mass-transfer coefficients among liquid, gas and membrane.
